DESTINATION: NorthamptonHeritage-listed Northampton is 51km north of Geraldton in the Nokanena Brook Valley. The town's heyday came in the mid-1800s after the discovery of local copper and lead deposits; many historic buildings date from this era. Main AttractionsA former mine manager's residence, the construction of Chiverton House, now a museum of pioneer memorabilia, was completed by convicts in 1875. Other buildings of note are the Old Convent, Church of Our Lady in Ara Coeli, designed by Monsignor John Hawes, and Gwalla St miners' cottages. Early headstones can be perused at the Old Cemetery and Pioneer Memorial opposite the Gwalla Church ruins. |
