DESTINATION: Northampton

Heritage-listed Northampton is 51km north of Geraldton in the Nokanena Brook Valley. The town's heyday came in the mid-1800s after the discovery of local copper and lead deposits; many historic buildings date from this era.

Main Attractions

A former mine manager's residence, the construction of Chiverton House, now a museum of pioneer memorabilia, was completed by convicts in 1875. Other buildings of note are the Old Convent, Church of Our Lady in Ara Coeli, designed by Monsignor John Hawes, and Gwalla St miners' cottages. Early headstones can be perused at the Old Cemetery and Pioneer Memorial opposite the Gwalla Church ruins.

A relic from the Lead Mining Company, Warribanno Chimney is a National Trust smelter relic, 65km NW. District labour shortages during 1853-56 were resolved by the establishment of a convict hiring station at Lynton, the remnants of which can be seen 47km NW near Port Gregory. Fishing and surfing are popular at Horrocks Beach, 20km west.
