Port Hedland | Western AustraliaRenowned for handling Australia's largest amount of iron ore for export and for its mammoth salt exports, Port Hedland sits in a mangrove-lined inlet discovered in 1863 by Capt Peter Hedland. Main AttractionsTours of the bustling port area and the Nelson Point iron ore site depart from the tourist centre. A 26m-high Observation Tower behind the centre provides an excellent vantage of the port, town and shipping traffic. Relics of old manganese mines and BHP railway locomotives are some of the memorabilia on display at Don Rhodes Mining Museum on Wilson St. In Sutherland St is the Pioneer and Pearlers Cemetery where Japanese and Chinese nationals are buried. Aboriginal petroglyphs carved into a limestone ridge can be viewed with permission from Aboriginal Affairs and visitors are welcome at the Royal Flying Doctor Service and School of the Air. Whale-watching and flatback turtle nesting ecotours operate seasonally. |
