DESTINATION: RockinghamFrom Rockingham's founding in 1872 until the opening of the Fremantle harbour in 1897 this town operated as one of Western Australia's timber ports. Today it is a seaside resort city, conveniently located 47km south of Perth, capitalising on its pristine beaches and protected waterways. Main AttractionsBeach-based recreation is a major attraction, including swimming, boat harbour tours, 'watch and swim with the dolphins' cruises, and diving excursions to offshore wrecks and reefs. On Kent St is the Museum of Local History and exhibitions can be viewed at the Art Gallery on Civic Blvd. Western Australia's grain industry history is recounted at The Granary on Rockingham Rd, which is open by appointment. A coastal scenic lookout worth visiting is at Cape Peron on Peron Rd. |

Islands in nearby waters offer a variety of excellent excursions: Penguin Island has a colony of little penguins and a Penguin Experience Island Discovery Centre (access prohibited June-August during breeding season); Seal Island has a colony of sea-lions; Garden Island is the site of the HMAS Stirling naval base and features pleasant beaches accessible by private boat; and Shoalwater Bay Island Marine Park offers park cruises. Lake Richmond, 4km SW, has interesting walks and domed thrombolites (unlayered stromatolites). Marapana Wildlife World, 15km south, and Tumbulgum Farm, 29km east, are popular with families. A waterski park is 5km east at Baldivis and Peel Estate Winery offers cellar door sales. Seasonal wildflowers make the scenic drive to Serpentine Dam and Serpentine Falls, 48km SE, particularly worthwhile in spring.
