Roebourne

Established in 1864 and named after Western Australia's first Surveyor-General, John Septimus Roe, Roebourne is the oldest town in the Pilbara.

Main Attractions

Historic buildings reflect an earlier era when Roebourne served as an important administrative centre, and include the Holy Trinity Church (1894), Union Bank (1889), Victoria Hotel (1866) and 4 stone buildings constructed in 1887; the Post Office, Hospital, Court House and the Old Gaol which now houses the Roebourne Museum. Emma Withnell Heritage Trail is a 52km self-guided walk/drive tour through the historic coastal towns of Cossack, Point Samson and Wickham. Cossack, 14km north, was originally known as Tien Tsin Harbour and retains many interesting restored buildings from its brief era as a port. It was once connected to Roebourne by horse-drawn tram. Point Samson, 19km north, has good onshore and offshore fishing, boat hire, swimming and snorkelling. Local anglers also recommend visitors try Cleaverville, 25km north. Millstream-Chichester NP, 150km south, is a 2000km park with fascinating features; Pyramid Hill, a volcanic remnant; freshwater Python Pool and Chinderwarriner Pool; and Mount Herbert lookout (366m). Directions to bushwalking trails and self-drive tours can be obtained from the Millstream Homestead off Hamersley Iron Rd, which functions as the park's information centre.
