Tom Price

The discovery in 1962 of iron ore deposits at Mount Tom Price soon led to the Hamersley Iron Company establishing the town of Tom Price to support and service its mining operation. Situated on the edge of the Hamersley Range at an altitude of 747m, it is the highest town in Western Australia.

Mount Nameless, 6km west, has an elevation of 1128m, affording panoramic views of the town and mine. Its summit is accessible via 4WD or from the walking track at the base of the hill. Bushwalking and scenic drives are popular pursuits in the rugged Karijini (Hamersley Range) NP, 50km east. Renowned for its spectacular and colourful gorges and prolific wildlife, highlights include Dales Gorge, a giant termite mound, Circular Pool and Fortescue Falls, Oxers Lookout, swimming pools at Hamersley Gorge, and an Aboriginal interpretive centre in the south-east. Tour operators also run day trips, camping safaris and helicopter flights.
