This township is situated in the north-east wheat belt, 184km from Perth. The name, Wongan Hills, originates from an Aboriginal word for 'whispering hills'. Mount Matilda, 10km west, is a flora and fauna reserve with an ecowalk trail. In stark contrast to the region's flat farmlands are various rock formations also popular for wildflower sightings: Dingo Rock, 26km east, Mount O'Brien Lookout, 10km west, Gathercole Reserve on Moonijin Rd, and Christmas Rock, an old water catchment area closer to town, accessed off Wandoo Cres.
