Alice Springs School of the Air - Alice Springs
Alice Springs School of the Air was established in 1951 to provide a much needed education resource to children living in remote Central Australia. At the time, it was the only one of its kind in the world and HF (high frequency) radio was the mode of communication for these school lessons.
Students study at home with a home tutor and join with a teacher for regular live class lessons. Nowadays, broadcast is via satellite from the studio in Alice Springs, which visitors may view from the visitor centre. Outside school hours and at times of no live classes being broadcasted, recorded lessons are screened for visitor viewing.
Visit us and join with one of our guides for a presentation about the history and operation of the school, taking you on a virtual journey of education in Outback Australia from the early years to the present day.
