Return to Ross

Somercotes offers colonial cottage accommodation in the rural Tasmanian town of Ross. Stay on one of the original Tasmanian estates, circa 1823, still inhabited by the descendants of original settlers.

The cottages are faithfully restored to retain their historic ambience. There are two-bedroom units available as well as single, twin and double rooms. The maximum occupancy is four guests in a cottage, each containing a fully equipped kitchen. There are en suite bathrooms, laundry facilities and cosy log fires. Evening meals can be prepared by arrangement. Stay in a cottage built for the first workers and find out their fascinating stories before and after they came to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania).

Wander the cottage gardens and marvel at the grand homestead, double-thatched dairy and unusual stonework of the barn. Soak up the history of the fine stone stables and blacksmiths cottage. Wander down to the famous Ross Bridge and visit the cherry orchard with fresh cherries picked daily when in season. This is a unique base for enjoying the history, trout fishing and peaceful rivers of the midlands district.

Ross is about an hours’ drive from Launceston, 78 kilometres (48 miles) south along the Midlands Highway.
