Country Racing - Broome
From May to August each year Norwest racecourses come alive with the sound of thundering hooves and popping champagne corks!
In Broome on Saturday afternoons and well into the evening, hoards of punters flock to the picturesque Broome Turf Club set right alongside Cable Beach.
The week of festivities leading up to the cup is well known as the Broome Racing Carnival, attracting visitors from all over the world who mix and mingle with the multicultural locals in a friendly atmosphere of excitement, fun and romance.
The balmy evening of tropical Broome in the dry season lend perfectly to the continuing party after the races when the punters are reluctant to leave the live entertainment, dancing, two-up and gaming tables.
Broome's Race Days run from May to August, ending with Ladies Day (Wednesday) and followed by the massive Saturday Broome Cup.
The horses head north to Derby for two racing meets in June and second meet being the Derby Cup.
Then onto the East Kimberley for the Wyndham Cup, Kununurra Ladies Day and the Kununurra Cup all in mid-late August.
In the Pilbara the fine sunny days and warm nights encourage locals and visitors alike to don their glad rags and head to the local turf clubs. In July the Marble Bar Cup, Roebourne Ladies Day and Roebourne Cup Day, followed by the Port Hedland Cup in August.
