Shinju Matsuri Festival of the Pearl rekindles the excitement and romance of Broome’s early days as a world renowned producer of Pearls and Pearl shell. Japanese, Chinese, Malay, Koepangers, Pilipino and Europeans flocked to Broome from the late 1800’s to be a part of this prosperity. This unique multicultural melting pot of pearl industry workers, including local Aborigines, contributed to the spirit and energy that is still present in the exotic town of Broome today.

One of the most anticipated moments of the Shinju Matsuri Festival is the waking of Sammy the Dragon and the man behind the resurrection of Sammy each year, Mr Greg Quicke, will be acknowledged for his valuable contribution as the 2009 Shinju Matsuri Patron.

During the 2009 Shinju Matsuri Festival the town will explode with locals, visitors and tourists and it is an opportunity for the town of Broome to showcase its natural beauty, unique history and diverse character. “As a local community we have obligations to ensure that we correctly educate people to make certain that Broome’s unique and diverse identity is acknowledged and remembered through the generations and Shinju Matsuri has the power to do this”, says Shinju Board member Ms Anthea Demin.
