The magnificent natural playground of the Fraser Coast hosts diverse and unique landscapes, from intriguing coloured sands, rainforests, giant sand dunes and basalt headlands to tranquil lakes, beaches and national parks.

Boasting the world's largest sand island 120km long and an average of 15km wide and magnificent waterways, the Fraser Coast offers a full range of watersports, including swimming, fishing and diving.

Apart from a few areas of private land, Fraser Island is a World Heritage-listed national park; the only place on earth where rainforest grows from sand. Most areas of interest are in the central part of the island, and 4WD tracks and walking tracks lead past major sites. Lake Boomanjin is a fresh-water lake perched high up on the island's sand dunes it is the largest perched lake in the world. Sandy beaches surround the lake and there are camping and picnic areas. Wildlife on the island is prolific, from dingoes to wild horses and wallabies to Jabirus.

The secluded seaside townships dotting the Great Sandy Strait, such as Tuan, Boonooroo, Poona and Tinnanbar, provide opportunities for more sedate and relaxed activities like fishing and boating.

A major attraction for visitors is the annual migration (Aug-Oct) of majestic humpback whales through the waters of Hervey Bay en route to feeding grounds in Antarctica.

Shipwreck Survivor: After the wreck of the Stirling Castle in 1836, Eliza Fraser was cast ashore on Fraser Island where she lived with the Dalungbara Aboriginal people. She was rescued by 'Wandi', the escaped convict, David Bracefell. The island is named in her honour.
