REGION: Clare Valley
The Clare Valley is just an hour and a half north of Adelaide. With a rich cultural tapestry dating back 160 years and more than 35 cellar doors, the region is perfect for immersing yourself in the finer things in life: food and wine, divine places to stay, history, arts and festivals. It has been likened to Tuscany. Classic stone buildings, pretty churches and rolling hills patterned with vines. Established in 1851 by the Jesuits, now more than 30 wineries produce prestigious wines, especially riesling. Discover antiques and crafts and indulge at the chic Gourmet Weekend. It’s not only wine that thrives in the Clare Valley. Cereal grains and sheep farming are the other primary industries and in Burra, vintage cider is made from apples grown in the region. To make the most of the scenic Clare Valley, find a country style cottage set in gentle green sheep-grazing land. An idyllic short retreat, or take your camera and walking boots and linger longer. Either way, all visitors to the Clare Valley region in South Australia, North of Adelaide will find it easy to tour the famous vineyards and rich architecture of the valley that runs North-South. For a slower-pace walkers and cyclists can tour The Riesling Trial, a 27km track that runs through the valley. |
