REGION: Flinders Ranges and Outback

wildflowers.jpg

Flinders Ranges in the Australian Outback is renowned for its rugged mountain scenery, deep gorges and tranquil valleys, this is a land of legends, telling tales of adventure, hardship, success and failure. Located north of Adelaide, the ancient landscape of the Flinders Ranges, South Australia has constantly been reshaped over the ages, granite, dating to 600 million years, has been found.

The superb Brachina Gorge offers up secrets of its geological history. Seashell remains have been found in the midst of rocky inland deserts and there are remnants of fossilised palm trees. The walls of the gorge at Mount Billy Creek have fossils embedded in them, meaning this area was once an ancient seabed.

For more than 40 000 years Aboriginal people lived in this area; ceremonial grounds, cave paintings and carvings testify to their cultural and spiritual links with the land.

There are a great many natural attractions to explore in this SA region, including vast salt lakes, historic mining areas, rock formations, gorges and picturesque waterholes and a range of flora and fauna, some of it rare.

Accommodation, tours and attractions can be found at Coober Pedy, Hawker, Port Augusta, Quorn and Roxby Downs. The Flinders Ranges are a must see destination for Australian travellers and four wheel drive adventurers with no shortage of desert tracks, off road challenges and outback characters.

naturalwanders | 2008-01-31 | On the way back to Marree from Muloorina Station, we crossed the Dog Fence. The Dog Fence runs for 4,850 kilometres across the states of South Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland. Without it, dingoes would no doubt decimate sheep. It is a well-maintained fence, and is the longest man-made barrier in the world. | read more
