REGION: Phillip Island and Gippsland Discovery
Phillip Island and Gippsland Discovery, Victoria offers a range of activities and attractions, much of them centred around Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory, however there are many towns and attractions in the area dotted along this stretch of Victoria's coast. Phillip Island, located in the calm waters of Western Port and a 1.5hr drive from Melbourne, is accessed by a bridge from the mainland at San Remo. It is Victoria's premier destination for international visitors and boasts superior surfing and un-spoilt beaches, an array of wildlife, including colonies of koalas, seals and the famed little penguins' the island's major draw-card. Phillip Island also has some outstanding geological formations, including The Pinnacles, ancient columns of pink granite; the Forrest Caves, large sea-eroded caverns; and Pyramid Rock, a column of basalt in the shape of a pyramid. Cowes is the major town and administrative centre of the island and where the majority of the island's accommodation is to be found. The Australian leg of the 500cc world motorcycle championships is held at the Phillip Island Racing Circuit, not far from Cowes each October. The combined attractions of Phillip Island make it an ideal holiday location. Wilsons Promontory or 'The Prom', as it is fondly called, is one of Victoria’s best-known attractions at the southern most point of mainland Australia. Renowned for its spectacular scenery, the 50,000 hectare national park features magnificent and secluded beaches, cool fern gullies, great views, spectacular rock formations and an abundance of wildlife. The drive from the entrance at Yanakie to Tidal River settlement is scenic and is well-signposted, with car parks, beaches and bushland accessible via side roads. However, the best way to enjoy the spectacular scenery is on one of the many walking trails throughout the peninsula. Major towns in the Gipplsand area outside of Wilsons Prom and Phillip Island include: Drouin, Heyfield, Inverloch, Korumburra, Leongatha, Maffra, Moe, Morwell, Sale, Traralgon, Warragul and Wonthaggi to name a few.
