Gipsy Point Day Four
The news was focused on the bush fires in the Gippsland region. We wondered if they would progress up the coast to Genoa, Gipsy Point and Mallacoota as the weather continued into the extreme.
We felt that we were in the clear and that the fires would not reach us and the lodge was booked solid for dinner that night.
Late in the afternoon the smoke started to get thicker in the air. Soot was evident on your clothing and the lodge was starting to receive the first of many cancellations for the evening.
By 5:30pm the sky turned black and the area took on an orange appearance. The outside sensor lights came on as if it were night and we listened closely to local reports of the fire front and whether it would reach us though much to our relief it never came.
The only positive outcome from the fire scare was the food. Mathew had over catered due to the last minute cancellations in the restaurant and we gorged ourselves on bugs and duck. True camping food....
We intend to move on tomorrow and start our migration up Australia's east coast, next stop Narooma.
