Gipsy Point resides on the Genoa River near the border of Victoria and New South Wales in Far East Gippsland.

Gipsy Point, Far East Gippsland – Victoria

I could be mistaken for being biased when I speak of Gipsy Point and the Far East Gippsland Region of Victoria, as friends of ours own the Gipsy Point Lodge and we typically make a pilgrimage to the area when we can.

The truth is I have been travelling to these parts since I was a child and I hold great affection for area, its remoteness and scenery.

I apply a very basic rule when travelling Australia which generally works most times… The further away a destination is from a Capital City, the better.

Of course, it all depends on what you are looking for in a location. For mine, most places that don’t receive day traffic (day trippers) tend to be quieter, cleaner, more peaceful and less developed. Far East Gippsland fits that category. Small towns, less development, unspoilt waterways, extensive bush land with abundant wildlife.
Boating with Friends, Gipsy Point - Victoria
Perfect! So what does one do in a place like Gipsy Point on the Genoa River?

Boating is certainly the major attraction and the lakes and river systems are extensive so whether it be sailing, cruising, canoeing or fishing there are miles of waters to be covered and the fishing is excellent.

Spotting wildlife is also a popular pass time. Sea Eagles are often seen around this area. If you take a slow, 20 minute cruise upstream from Gipsy Point (with picnic) you will find a Sea Eagle’s nest built high in the gum trees. The eagles are regularly seen gliding in the wind currents or perched on dead tree limbs, hungrily eyeing the activities of fisherman. Undersize fish released to be caught another day are often swooped upon in a spectacular display, if their retreat is tardy.

Gipsy Point and Mallacoota are around 7 hours drive from Melbourne, less if you are one of my friends…which makes it pretty remote and quiet. If fishing or nature spotting is not your thing, you can do a lot worse than enjoying slow paced lifestyle with a glass of red and a good book.

Reference :

Gipsy Point
Gipsy Point is situated at the junction of the Genoa and Wallagaraugh Rivers at the head of Mallacoota Inlet and 20k from Mallacoota. Surrounded by the Croajingolong National Park and the waterways, Gipsy Point has a feeling of remoteness that belies its proximity to Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.
