Whether it's shopping on Bourke St, coffee in Fitzroy or lunch on the South Bank, Melbourne is known for its distinctive cultural pockets of surprise.

Thanks to an ongoing transformation in Melbourne, if you want a break from the hustle and bustle of the narrow pavements in the city, hop on a tram to the Docklands.   Here you will find a new pocket of surprise.

Located in the heart of Melbourne, the Docklands area is at the western edge of the central business district (the Southern Cross Station side of the city).

The area is clean and spacious with the waterways of Victoria Harbour and three kilometres of Yarra River frontage.  For an area about the same size as Melbourne's CBD it is much more relaxing!

Due to Docklands' central location it is quick and easy to get to by car, train, tram, ferry, and bike or on foot making it a good place to rest for lunch or dinner.

Since renovations in 2000, the 'Blue Park' marina holds some exciting water displays during the year.  This area of deep water off Victoria Harbour is a regular spot for water events and festivals including yachting, dragon boat racing, wake boarding and boat shows.

From the Docklands why not catch a water taxi past the super yachts, up the Yarra River to the City and South Yarra area or down to the lower stretches of Port Phillip Bay.  From here you can see the quaint old port of Williamstown.

For a higher view visitors will soon be able to take a ride in the giant ferris wheel which is currently under construction.  Dubbed 'Melbourne Eye', views from the top will be 150 metres from the ground offering some a unique view of the city-workers in their cubicles and the lowlands surrounding Melbourne.

If you are a sports fan you can walk around the Telstra Dome whilst others tag along to critique the impressive urban art pieces that are scattered along the Docklands area.

With the on-land attractions of restaurants, bars, a big-screen and state-of the art-marina, the Docklands is an interesting place to visit at all times of the year.

Check it out next time you are in the City.
