Film Epic 'Australia' sheds light on harsh NT landscape
Filmed on location from Darwin to Sydney, Baz Luhrmann’s inspirational movie ‘Australia’ is receiving worldwide interest. Australia hasn’t been this excited since ‘Crocodile Dundee’.
Baz Luhrmann’s period epic ‘Australia’ is due to be released in November. Starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, the film is set around Darwin as it focuses on challenges of running a 2,000 head cattle station in NT during the bombing of the area during World War II.
Interestingly, Baz Luhrmann’s production company has also produced the adverts for Tourism Australia’s new $40m advertising campaign, due to screen in 23 countries.
Seeing as there has been so much talk about the film, planbooktravel have done some digging to find out a few locations of the upcoming epic.
Filming was carried out at diverse Australian locations such as Kununurra in the Kimberley region, WA. Kununrra is home to the famous stripy formations, the Bungle Bungles and famous Argyle Diamond Mine.
The story takes the film crew to Bowen, QLD, which is the now holiday capital of the Townsville region. If there are shots of the coast expect to see beautiful beaches and coral reefs in crystal clear water, so hopefully no crocs!
Darwin in the Top End, NT, is a beautiful coastal city who's tragic past is reconstructed in the movie. Today, many divers also re-visit the remains of this storyline in the clear waters of Darwin Harbour.
Due to its many familiar trademarks such as the Opera House, the bridge and its busy harbour, Sydney is a stop-off point on the movie. It will be interesting to see how the city is presented considering the 1940's setting of the movie.
So there you have it, ‘Australia’ by Baz Luhrmann is a great opportunity for Australia to again show-off its spectacularly diverse landscape to a global audience.

Darwin CBD and Suburbs
- Darwin, the Northern Territory’s vibrant capital, is a city with influences that are as much Asian as they are western. A city with dozens of nationalities sharing an easy-going lifestyle, Darwin is located on a peninsular with the sea on three sides. It is a place unvisited by winter where the weather can usually be described as either balmy or sultry. Darwin is well appointed, possessing most of the amenities expected of a much larger city. Watching sunsets and storms are something of a local pastime, and after a cleansing rain shower you can almost hear things growing.
