Going on holiday in Northern Victoria? Did you know that Gunbower Island is Australia's largest inland island?

Gunbower Island actually supports the significant Gunbower Forest wetlands.  The nearest town and best stepping-off point is the attractive village of Cohuna, situated just north of this habitat.  The popular riverport resort of Echuca is a short drive south-east and has a selection of accommodation to choose from when staying in this region.

The Murray River, the great artery that delineates much of Victoria's northern border, flows past the eastern side of Gunbower Island. The Gunbower Creek defines the other side of the island, which is a 26,400 hectare floodplain.

These wetlands are officially recognised as significant under the Ramsar International Wetlands Convention. They provide a breeding and nursery area for major tree species, aquatic plants, native fish species and amphibians such as the Barking Marsh Frog.

The island supports populations of goannas, possums, kangaroos, emus and snakes, as well as 160 different species of birds.

Although you can explore by car, why not get active to really experience this important habitat.  You can take part in bushwalking, birdwatching or camping.

Others hit the water on the Gunbower Island Canoe Trail, a return journey of five km, takes paddlers past waterbirds, aquatic plants and wildlife.

The grand but elusive Murray Cod is the prime target of fisherfolk, while others prefer to drift about in boats.

The Gunbower Island Forest Drive extends 60km from Koondrook to Torrumbarry Weir, which is a popular destination for water-skiers and picnickers.

Simply driving through one of Victoria's largest river red gum forests is something special, but there are sites of interest along the way.

Preferred stopping-off points include the site of Grey's Mill, Wattle Creek, and the historic timber cutters' steps. Red gums were logged and milled around Gunbower from the 1870s onwards, and especially during World War Two. On the higher ground the forest is formed by beautiful box trees.

Happy Travels!
