If you visit Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula one place not to be missed is Federation Chocolates. The building is owned and operated by Maureen and Laurie Tatnell whose family history dates back to the early 1900s when their forebears were blacksmiths and saw millers.  These early pioneers endured incredibly harsh conditions doing dangerous work to earn a modest living.

The Museum
The Museum commemorates the Tasman Peninsula’s convict history, saw milling and blacksmith industries with a display of historic memorabilia.

The building is constructed of timber milled by the owners and stands on land which was crossed by three different railway lines many years ago. Australia’s first rail line ran across this site in 1836. The line was built by convicts to carry coal and passengers from Norfolk Bay to Long Bay to avoid the treacherous sea voyage around Tasman Island.

The second rail line traversed the block in the early 1900s carrying saw logs from Forestry Commission land in the hills to Tyler Bros sawmill at Little Norfolk Bay.
The third rail line built in the 1930s transferred sawn timber for Dudley Tatnell’s sawmill high in the hills overlooking Eaglehawk Neck to Taranna.

The building has many interesting historic features including convict-hewn sandstone, Tasmanian Blue gum columns and beams recycled from an old wharf, internal Stringybark wall cladding from the old museum at Port Arthur and  various timbers milled by the owners.

The Chocolate
All the chocolate is meticulously hand made from top quality ingredients sourced Australia wide.  Secret recipes have been developed over many years to produce 17 flavours of mouth-watering chocolate.  All the flavours are available for sampling before purchase.
Four flavours of chocolate truffles are also created......these are to die for!!!!
