The area from the Goldcoast to Byron Bay is a good place to experience the (arguably) best of the beaches and rainforest that the east coast of Australia has to offer. For a great day trip pack your water bottles and pack lunch for a trek down to Minyon Falls in the Nightcap National Park, New South Wales.

The Minyon Falls is between Murwillumbah and Lismore, in far northern NSW.  The falls are part of the Mount Warning caldera.  The Nightcap National Park is one of five NP’s that make up the ancient Mount Warning shield volcano.  The fact that all the parks are World Heritage listed says enough about their scenic, ecological and historical importance to the area.  A visit to this area is a 'must do' for anyone who visits this part of Australia.

The 1.5 -2 hour walk begins at ‘Minyon Grass’ car park/picnic area at the top of the falls. From here there is a majestic view right over Evans Head to Byron Bay, certainly a view to behold and the best part is you haven’t broken into a sweat to enjoy it!

To really experience the energy and unique balance of the sub-tropical rainforest you should make the time to trek to the bottom of the deep palm-shaded valley.  It is here you get to see what happens to the river at the end of its 104 metre plunge.

The walk through the shaded canopy is feels like you could be in the Amazon rainforest, with giant tree ferns and towering trees and palms.

Once in the valley, the male contingent of our party took a swim in the frigid plunge pool which was exhilarating as the water crashed onto our backs.  The whole valley has an eerily pre-historic feel to it which I shall never forget.  The ‘energy’ one experiences there is not surprising when you consider the living beings and creatures which must have visited this valley during its creation over the thousands of years.

Needless to say we did not look forward to the walk back up the falls.  However in the 40 minutes it took us to return we were so ingrossed by the incredible rainforest, we were all really surprised to be back in no time!

When driving back home make sure you allow enough time to stop in at small town called Bangalow (8km inland from Byron Bay).  It is a rustic town, full of charm but most importantly they serve an excellent cold drink in the local bars and cafes.

Lismore, Northern NSW.
Lismore and the surrounding area, Northern New South Wales, is nestled between the rainforest and the sea. Lismore offers a relaxed blend of city convenience and country charm and boasts a good selection of accommodation, dining and leisure activities to keep visitors entertained all year round.
