Australia: Love at first sight - Darwin
1995 Esme & Nick's Australian Travel Diary (September to October)
11th of September 1995
We left Broome and arrived in Derby the 11th of September 1995.
We spent some hours lying on a beach in Derby. The sea wasn’t so inviting… and I got eaten alive from sandflies!
We then visited intresting places like the “Boab prison tree”, the Jetty where every 12 hours tide retreats of 10,3 meters and the flying doctor Base.
The day after we did a very nice flight over the “Buccaneer Archipelago” and the “Horizontal Waterfalls”. A very impressive view!
13rd of September 1995
We left Derby and as soon as we arrived in Kununurra we immediately looked for a pharmacy!
Derby’s sandflies became for me a nightmare! It took some days to get better, thanks to medicine and calamine lotion!
On the way to Kununurra we shortly stopped in Halls Creek and a little bit longer in Turkey Creek for a pleasant helicopter flight over the “Bungle Bungle”. A very nice flight and beautiful view!
14th of September 1995
The itching was unbearable… no plans for that day… and the day after!
16th of September 1995
We visited the town of Wyndahm, and a nice Wildlife Park near Kununurra, with koalas and… monkeys!
17th of September 1995
I finnally got better and we went to Katherine. We did a really nice night cruise on the Katherine River (with dinner on the bank) visiting the area of the fresh water crocodile. We were 5 people and one Guide. A very nice experience!
18th of September 1995
The day after we took another river cruise and we visited the Katherine Gorge. A very beautiful Gorge, but the trip was overcrowded for us…(about 40 people).
19th of September 1995
We arrived in Darwin. The very first big city since we left Perth! We liked it and we did stay there about one week. We spent allmost the time in Cinemas, doing shopping or just walk arround. We also visited the Northern Territory Wildlife Park that we found interesting. We did really enjoy to see from close up the flying foxes and the White Bellied Sea Eagle.
26th of September 1995
In Adelaide River Crossing we did… with many other tourist… the now famous Jumping Crocodile cruise.
The same day we entered the Kakadu NP from North and slept the first night in the camping area of the tourist village.
27th of September 1995
We first visited the Bowali Visitor Center, then the Ubirr Rock where we did really enjoy the beautiful view over the Wet Lands.
We slept in a camping with swimmingpool in Jaribu. A fresh bath was the best after a very hot day! (about 38° C.)
28th of September 1995
We visit the Nourlangie Rock where we could apreciate the ancient Aboriginal Rock Paintings.
29th of September 1995
We did a perfect cruise at sunrise on the “Yellow Water”: we saw birds, crocodiles, wild horses, wild pigs, water flowers…
We left the Kakadu National Park with wonderful images still in our eyes!
We made our way to the Qeensland passing trhough Daly Waters and Tennant Creek, where we visited an old gold mine… looking for fortune…!
In Tennant Creek we didn’t realise to be so closed to the “Devils Marbles” (almost 100 Km)… and we passed it, going directly to Mount Isa.
the 2nd of October 1995
We left Tennant Creek and the Northern Territory entering the Queensland…
to be continued…

Darwin CBD and Suburbs
- Darwin, the Northern Territory’s vibrant capital, is a city with influences that are as much Asian as they are western. A city with dozens of nationalities sharing an easy-going lifestyle, Darwin is located on a peninsular with the sea on three sides. It is a place unvisited by winter where the weather can usually be described as either balmy or sultry. Darwin is well appointed, possessing most of the amenities expected of a much larger city. Watching sunsets and storms are something of a local pastime, and after a cleansing rain shower you can almost hear things growing.
