Cycling the Yarra River Trail - just add water.
I won’t go into any detail but if you live anywhere in Melbourne and near the Yarra River you can safely assume you’re not too far from a cycle path right into the City.
Now it’s interesting note that the exact distance between my house and the office is on the exact and unique stretch that one can actually ride both sides of the river (between MacRobertson Bridge and Swan Street Bridge.
So what’s the big deal I hear you ask? Well I started cycling the southern bank to the Swan St Bridge, it’s relaxing and you basically have it to yourself for 20 minutes.
However as I discovered this morning, if you take the northern bank under the Monash freeway, you can shave 10 minutes off your journey. Problem is, this comes at price.
This involves staying out of the way of the ‘hyper-glow’ Lycra projectiles that cycle past covered in frozen spittle at 50kph. Forget about the ‘give way to oncoming traffic’ rule! It’s dog eat dog for the city slickers racing to the office cubicle. To make it worse the floating platform is only 2m wide and it’s under the roar of Monash FWY rush hour traffic piling into the city.
I’m quite new to this form of commuter transport and I really can’t decide if the 10 minutes extra in bed is worth it... does anyone else suffer the same predicament? Or are you one of these bi-ped projectiles? Let me know your cycling experiences.
