Derwent Valley Accommodation Tasmania
When you think of Tasmania a picture will form in your mind of tall majestic old growth forests, lush green temperate rainforest, clear fresh water and incredible mountain ranges. How about discovering all of these things in one area?
We have written this review as owners of the Giants' Table and Cottages property in Tasmania.
Maydena is situated only 75 minutes from Hobart, but feels like a world away. The last Tasmanian Tiger to be captured was from here and there are stories that possibly it wasn’t the last one after all? The surrounding bush is full of wildlife and on our own property you can experience a close-up and personal meeting with wallabies, pademelons, potoroos and most importantly, platypus, which live in our lake and ponds and can be seen swimming and diving during the summer months.
Maydena is only a ten minute drive from Mount Field National Park with the icon of Tasmania, Russell Falls, at its heart and the often snow-covered Lake Dobson looking down on it.
Here too is the deepest limestone cave system in the Southern Hemisphere accessible in
the form of the Junee Cave where a waterfall emerges after racing for 30 km underground.
Only 20km away is the Styx Valley where you can see trees up to 100 metres tall and over 400 years old. If you take a few hours to explore further, you can see the Gordon Dam, Lake Pedder and the 1.38 million hectares of World Heritage Area.
Forestry Tasmania is about to open its newest Tourist Attraction in the town, a 4 wheel drive trip up through the forests to the Eagles Eyrie Lookout where you will be able to see above the forests from the “rooftop of Tasmania” and up to 100 km away in the distance. Truly spectacular. There is also to be an Adventure Hub where small adventure operators will offer a range of activities using the natural surrounding area, including things such as fly fishing, mountain-biking and even a special bicycle that rides on a railway line.
We believe the best place to stay and enjoy these activities is the Giants’ Table and Cottages where you will find a fully licensed restaurant open for dinner in the summer and seven self-contained cottages which offer anything from a one-bedroom spa to a five bedroom house. The houses all contain bedrooms, bathrooms, sitting rooms and kitchens and all are comfortably furnished and very spacious.
