Driving to WA accross the Nallabour Plain
I'm planning on visiting some friends in Perth for New Years, is this the right time of year to go?
I've always pondered what sort of person drives the large expanse of dust accross the Nallabour plain from SA to WA, but never really had the opportunity to think about actually doing it. I mean, once you get through alive, I would have to get my car home again!
Anyway, with friends moving onto a new property an hour outside Perth, I thought I'd see if it was possible this around time of year? Any hints?

I have done it a couple of times. In late December be prepared for the heat. Try to avoid driving after dusk, that's when the wildlife come out, look out for the kangaroos, it can all happen very quickly. Good experience though.

We have done the trip three times twice west to east and once east to west. The way we did the east west trip was depart from Pt. Augusta, heading for Ceduna, then drove till about 3.30 and starting loking for a bush camp (free camping guide is very useful0 then onto Kalgoolie and onto Perth. It pays to fill up with Fuel at Pt Augusta, top up at Ceduna and again at Norsemen top up and fill up at Kalgoolie. I carried a couple of Jerry cans and only used one. Stopping at the head of the Bight is worth while break.
Coming back along the coast to Esperance is a great way back home. Lovely changing scenery and history and wine.
