Move over Sovereign Hill. I’ve just been to Adelong (NSW)
With time to waste on my way to Sydney from Melbourne, I stumbled across Adelong during a drive through the stunning Snowy Mountains (NSW) in all their Autumn glory.
After taking in miles of emerald valleys and ancient old trees I stopped by luck at quaint little town called Adelong, in the Tumut region of the Snowy Mountains, NSW. If you get the time I would strongly recommend you take the chance to take in a bit of this pinnacle example of the 1880’s gold-rush town.
With a population of 900 don’t expect to get stuck in traffic, so park you car and take a stroll through the heritage listed – gold-rush buildings, it wasn’t hard to imagine the excitement and abundance of money as the lucky goldminers and landowners cashed in their good fortune from 1854 -1914.
We camped by the river which was extremely peaceful. The next morning we walked 25minutes along the rivers path to Adelong Creek where all the hard work was done. Adelong creek produced more gold than any other stream NSW.
You can walk right around all the old workings and pools where the prospectors would have looked for gold. When we where there we walked passed an original old cottage from one of the Cornish miners, he obviously bought a few mementos with him as the colourful daffodils where growing all around!
All-in-all a very unexpected delight that I’d like to recommend.
