New Norfolk
This historic town, 33km NW of Hobart on the Derwent River, was pioneered around 1808 by Norfolk Island free settlers. The district produces most of the hops used by Australian breweries, although the main industry in the region is paper manufacture.

update on Derwent valley

Posted by john grimey at 2008-10-01 12:20
The Derwent Valley is no longer timber and paper. It has Tasmania's largest raspberry farm, and the local jams are renowned. It has cherry orchards, olive groves, apple orchards and several of Tasmania's best vineyards Stefano Lubiana, Meadowbank, Kinvarra estate, Laurel Bank and Derwent Estate. It still produces hops, and now has Australia's only farm based brewery, Two Metre Tall brewery, making wonderful hand crafted real ales. Trout were first introduced to the southern hemisphere at the Salmon Ponds Hatchery, where there is a museum and stocked trout ponds, and truffles were first planted in Australia at plenty, in the Valley. Nant single malt whiskey distillery has commenced distilling, and Thorpe Farm produces the best goats cheese in Tasmania. This region is becoming a food and wine destination of world standard.
