The whale watching season is from May to November each year. Port Stephens is recognised as one of the best areas to watch the whales on their migration north to warmer waters off Hervey Bay for the birth of their new calves. They stay close to land on the way north.

The first of the seasons migrating whales frolicked off Port Stephens on the weekend.  Fifteen whales were spotted off the coastline over the weekend with two humback whales spotted off Broughton Island just off the ooastline from Hawks Nest on Friday 16 May.  Of course there were the resident pods of dolphins to keep the whale watchers entertained.

It is expected that about 7000 whales will pass by Port Stephens along the Humpback Highway on the way to or returning from the annual breeding ground in Australia's northern waters.

Stay in Tea Gardens and enjoy a whale watching holiday.

Tea Gardens
Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest is situated in the southern end of the Great Lakes area, it approximately 2 1/2 hours drive north of Sydney, off the Pacific Hwy. The twin towns of Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest are separated by the Myall River that feeds the magestic Myall Lakes system. The towns are connected by the "Singing" bridge, aptly named fron the sound of the wind as it passes through the rails.
