What Can You Find in Lost World Valley, Queensland?
Finding yourself is a good beginning or losing your everyday self in the drama of the looming mountains of Lamington National Park. Look through the rainforest, look through the draping mists, look for the unexpected clarity of light after a storm. Soak it up before you consider what else is here to be done.
Consider a horse ride from Cedar Glen Farmstay– a half day, an hour or just a half, wandering through the valley and over the river across the paddocks and under the trees. The horses are reliable mountain stock and the ride leaders well trained for the task. www.cedarglen.com.au
Take a walk to the headwaters of the Albert River, rockhopping to the overhanging rainforest. Listen to the bird calls or the silence. Plunge in to a chill and bubbling rock pool for a natural spa. Other walks are possible over marked trails along ridge tops or gentler slopes.
For experienced bushwalkers, the Stinson aircraft which crashed in 1937 is still accessible with maps and compass, as is the grave of Jim Westray the young Englishman who died in his quest for help for the survivors of the crash. Westray’s Grave can be found just an hour or two along Christmas Creek.
There are numerous possibilities for fishermen in the river pools which have been stocked with bass and cod by a local very active fishing group called Carp Busters. Dams have also been stocked by owners and a catch release system maintains good numbers. Michael and Sally Undery, can show you where the best spots are. They also offer a pretty farmhouse called ‘Crebra’ for group holiday rental. This is one of two houses managed by Green Triangle Experiences. The other one is ‘Katandra’, with lovely facilities in a gorgeous spot overlooking the river. www.greentriangle.com.au
By way of contrast to the outrageous natural beauty of the valley, Garden Hill at Lost World maintains a unique gallery and museum, housing rescued buildings and artefacts and tools that help recreate a bygone time. This is the all important human record beautifully embellished by the art works hanging in the converted slab- built carriage shed that has become a gallery and a dramatic foil for the lovely pieces that are hung there. www.gardenhillatlostworld.com.au
Foodies can find a Cooking School in Lost World Valley. Wild Lime Cooking School offers wild food in fusion with Asian and Mediterranean cuisine in the purpose built kitchen of Wild Lime Cottage, one of two accommodation options of Worendo B&B Cottages. Themed classes are held monthly and the calendar for 2009 has been released. The Cooking School also offers team building experiences or private group functions in a spectacular setting. www.worendo.com
Children love the valley. They swim and fish and hike and invent wonderful play places and companions. They can enjoy organised activity at Cedar Glen Farmstay or Tommerups Dairy Farm Tours or simply be themselves in a beautiful place.
You will find in Lost World Valley a group of people who respect the beauty of the place where they choose to live and who work to maintain a sustainable ecosystem with farming and tourism practices that will continue to support the health of the valley.
You will find a place to find yourself. www.lostworldvalley.com
